Inscape Chamber Orchestra returns to The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer where they have been the Ensemble-in-Residence since 2005. The program, entitled “Songs of the Earth,” features two works that circle the globe. Luciano Berio’s Folk Songs, set for small ensemble and mezzo-soprano, contains eleven arrangements of folk songs from various origins including the United States, Armenia, France, Sicily, Sardinia, while Gustav Mahler’s expansive The Song of the Earth (Das Lied von der Erde) will be heard in an expert arrangement for chamber ensemble by Arnold Schoenberg. Featuring two voices, Mahler’s emotive work was written after the composer read Hans Bethge’s Die chinesische Flöte (The Chinese Flute), a volume of ancient Chinese poetry from which he chose seven poems to set to music.
